Performance evaluation and boron rejection in a SWRO system under variable operating conditions

It is well known that reverse osmosis (RO) the leading desalination technology. As an energy intensive technology, exploitation of renewable sources (RES) to power RO systems a attractive option. A strategy take advantage all available off-grid system work with under variable operating conditions. This implies additional challenges in terms water production and permeate quality, among others. Boron rejection one main concerns seawater (SWRO) systems. The aim this was evaluate performance boron single-stage SWRO 7 membrane elements per pressure vessel initial permeability coefficients two membranes (TM820L-440 TM820S-400) were calculated from experimental data full-scale plant. These characteristics introduced simulation algorithm estimate behavior system. results show that, compared TM820S-400 membrane, TM820L-440 performed better form boric acid, but worse production. When RES-powered are designed conditions, consideration needs be given safe operation window concentration variation coefficient membranes.
